Life After Open-Heart Surgery: A Recovery Guide

Week by week — what to expect after cardiac surgery, from the first days in hospital to returning to work and exercise.

Life After Open-Heart Surgery: A Recovery Guide

Recovery after heart surgery is a journey measured in weeks, and knowing what to expect makes it far less frightening. This guide describes a typical course — your team will personalize it for you.

The first week — in hospital

You wake up in the cardiac ICU, usually for one or two nights, then move to the ward. Nurses will help you sit, stand and walk a little more every day. Coughing while hugging a pillow protects the chest wound. Most patients go home after five to seven days.

Weeks two to six — at home

Walk daily, a little farther each time. Take medications exactly as prescribed and never stop them on your own. Keep the wound clean and dry; some soreness, itching and mild swelling are normal. Avoid lifting anything heavier than 5 kg and do not drive until your surgeon allows it — usually around six weeks, when the breastbone has healed.

When to call us immediately

Fever above 38°C, redness or discharge from the wound, new or worsening shortness of breath, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or sudden weight gain of more than 2 kg in two days — call the clinic or come to the emergency department.

Getting your life back

Most people return to office work in six to eight weeks and to more physical jobs in about three months. Cardiac rehabilitation — supervised exercise and education — speeds recovery and halves the risk of future events. Ask your team about joining a program.
